Chagall est né en 1887 près de Vitebsk, (Russie) dans une famille juive hassidique, naturalisé français en 1937 et décède à Saint-Paul de Vence en 1985. Vitebsk restera, dans l’imaginaire de Chagall, le paradis naïf de l’enfance et il le représentera dans de nombreuses toiles. Chagall travailla à plusieurs reprises pour le théâtre ; il ne peut pas être rattaché à une école mais dans ce tableau il dévoile son interprétation personnelle du cubisme et sa remarquable aptitude à soumettre les formes cubistes à ses besoins artistiques personnels.

Chagall was born in 1887 near Vitebsk (Russia) into a Hassidic Jewish family, became a French citizen in 1937 and died in Saint-Paul-deVence in 1985. Vitebsk will remain in his imagination the naive paradise of his childhood and he is to paint it very often. He worked several times for the theatre; he cannot be attached to any particular school but in this picture he shows us his personal interpretation of Cubism and his remarkable capacity of subjecting Cubist forms to his personal artistic needs.
