Caspar David Friedrich est considéré comme l'artiste le plus significatif et le plus influent de la peinture romantique allemande du XIX° siècle, lorsque le romantisme s’étendait aux autres expressions artistiques telles que la littérature, la philosophie et la musique. Il était particulièrement inspiré par l’immensité magnifique de la mer. Ce tableau aux couleurs vibrantes et chaudes, qui semble faire participer le spectateur au voyage, montre un couple main dans la main, assis à la proue du bateau et regardant la ville qui se dessine à travers la brume.
