Description

From the artwork of Pierre Bonnard “Garden” He was a not only a painter but also an illustrator and lithographer. If he was at his beginnings, one of the Nabis group with whom he remained on good terms all his life, he developed an independent and ‘unclassable’ oeuvre, which appeared simple whilst being quite complex; he did not take into account in his work  the major artistic movements of his time like cubism or surrealism.  The landscapes of Le Cannet and the light of the Midi were for him sources of everlasting inspiration. It was during this period of 22 years there that he painted his most inspired paintings.

Pierre Bonnard Jardin 1936 - Garden

Garden, with its frothy mauves and pinks in his usual techniques, makes the irradiation of his colours both more bathed in sunlight and more caressing. Could nature have been, for Bonnard, a soothing refuge?
