Edvard Munch

Munch was a Norwegian symbolist painter, considered as an important forerunner of expressionist art. In Paris in 1891 he made the initial sketches for his most famous work, The Scream. Munch was interested in visualising expressions of the soul. From 1898 he became influenced by Modernism. Summer Night at Studenterlunden is full of colour, with soft, almost stylised contours, which work well with the winding and meandering structure of the painting, echoing the shoreline around Åsgårdstrand where he had bought a house in 1897
