Pablo Picasso

 Pigeones, 1957

Picasso moved to Cannes in 1955 and settled in a Baroquestyle villa he dubbed “California”.  In this superb setting, with its fin de siècle décor, the wrought-iron balconies overlooking the sea often provided perches for pigeons.  The artist had a special love for these birds, and did numerous paintings of them.  This very decorative painting of pigeons was part of a series of 9 canvases done by Picasso between September 6th and 14th, 1957 (Picasso Museum of Barcelona)
