John Singer Sargent

 Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, 1882-93

At a time when the art world was focussing on Impressionism, Sargent practised his own style of Realism. Born in America, he lived mostly in Florence and Paris, where he became close friends with Claude Monet. He became famous for his characteristic sophisticated style of portrait painting, visually brilliant with an audacious theatrical touch. He painted portraits of Auguste Rodin, John D. Rockefeller, Robert Louis Stevenson and two American Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
