Figure principale de l’Impressionnisme, Claude Monet (1840 – 1926) s’installe à Giverny en 1883. A partir de 1890, il commence à élaborer son fameux jardin, thème désormais central de ses tableaux. Il creuse les étangs et construit en 1895 l’élégant pont japonais au-dessus des nymphéas.
