A l’époque de l’impressionnisme, Sargent pratique une interprétation personnelle du réalisme. D’origine américaine, il vit essentiellement à Florence puis à Paris où il se lie d’amitié avec Claude Monet. Il devient célèbre pour ces portraits caractérisés par un style sophistiqué, une virtuosité visuelle et une certaine audace théâtrale. Il peindra notamment Auguste Rodin, John D. Rockefeller, Robert Louis Stevenson ou les deux présidents Theodore Roosevelt et Woodrow Wilson.
At a time when the art world was focussing on Impressionism, Sargent practised his own style of Realism. Born in America, he lived mostly in Florence and Paris, where he became close friends with Claude Monet. He became famous for his characteristic sophisticated style of portrait painting, visually brilliant with an audacious theatrical touch. He painted portraits of Auguste Rodin, John D. Rockefeller, Robert Louis Stevenson and two American Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
