Maria Sybilla Merian est née en 1647 à Francfort et décéda en 1717 à Amsterdam. Fille d’imprimeurs et d’illustrateurs célèbres, elle fut initiée à la peinture et au dessin très jeune par son beau-père. Talentueuse dès son adolescence, elle consacrera son œuvre à l’observation des insectes et des animaux, particulièrement les papillons et la métamorphose de leur chenille. A l’époque l’un des objectifs était de trouver des espèces qui remplaceraient le vers à soie.
Maria Sybilla Merian was born 1647 in Frankfurt and died on J1717 in Amsterdam. Daughter of famous printers and illustrators, she was introduced to painting and drawing at a very young age by her father-in-law. She was devoted her work to the observation of insects and animals, especially butterflies and the metamorphosis of their caterpillar. At the time one of the objectives was to find species that would replace the silkworm.
