Pierre Bonnard, bather at the end of the day, 1945 – Bathers
Pierre Bonnard was born in 1867 in Fontenay-aux-Roses and died in 1947 in Le Cannet. This French artist, a painter of people, faces, nudes, portraits, landscapes, interiors, still life, flowers and fruit, was also an etcher, and illustrator. A Postimpressionist, he was one of the Nabis group. But he finds progressively a very personal route, where he uses a palette of light and luminous colours, whilst keeping his keen sense of composition and outline. Whether his inspiration was, as here, with Bathers at the end of the day, his main preoccupation remains the light; in this painting it falls on the bathers, and catches, too, the wavelets on the shimmering deep-blue water.
